Diagnosis and Managementof Malignant Pleural Effusions

It is a great pleasure to invite you to a Symposiumon Diagnosis and Management of Malignant Pleural Effusions at Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde, Denmark.

Malignant pleural effusions (MPE) are increasingly commondue to improved cancer survival. The annual incidence of MPE averages that of breast cancer or prostate cancer. MPE inflicts a significant symptom burden on the patient, and isusual a marker of poor prognosis. Both cancer-specifictreatment and generic interventions ameliorate this condition.

We will discuss challenges in diagnostic workup as pleuralfluid cytology does not identify all cases of MPE. Surgicalthoracoscopy can be prevented by medical thoracoscopy orby biopsies guided by thoracic ultrasound. The timing ofcancer-specific treatment and definite pleural proceduressuch as pleurodesis and indwelling pleural catheders will bediscussed.

We would like to share with you our thoughts on this disease that crossed the borders between oncology andpulmonology and hope to welcome you at the Symposium.

We look forward to seeing you Friday,15 November, 2019 at Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde.
