The concept behind the campaign is to develop a long-term health awareness campaign that will speak not only to those already affected by lung disease, but also to those who may be affected in the future. The aim is to focus on public education, to try and reduce the burden of lung disease on society, and to select a different topic each year on which to focus. This year, the theme will be ‘Breathe Clean Air’, which will allow us to focus on the importance of having air that is free from pollution, passive smoke, dangerous gases and other toxins that can affect the airways.

The campaign aims to use the ERS Congress as the starting point for the campaign and World Spirometry Day to roll it out worldwide. We are already planning a range of public events in and around the city of Munich to coincide with the ERS International Congress, including a huge lung function testing event, patient education evenings and a children’s event. All the materials from these events will be made available, so that these events can be replicated at a local, regional or national level.

As part of the campaign, we would encourage you to hold a World Spirometry Day event during the month of September. We are currently working hard on a new website which will include all the tools and support you need to set-up your own event. The site will be live from May and will be found at: – including information on the campaign, clean air and more.

You, as National Delegates, could really help us to promote this initiative amongst people in your country and help us raise awareness of lung health across the globe.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about ‘Healthy Lungs for Life’ or how you can get involved, please feel free to contact Rebecca Johnson at the European Lung Foundation () at any time. You can also read the article in the ERS publication, Breathe, about ‘Healthy Lungs for Life’ here:
